Top 5 Questions You Should Ask Before Buying Timber Doors

August 8, 2023

Are you in the market for a new front door?

If you are doing a new build or it is time to upgrade your existing front door and you don’t know where to start, let us help you with answers to the top 5  questions you need to know.

   1. Why Timber?

Timber doors have many advantages when used in the home from strength and durability to increased energy efficiency, aesthetics and longevity.

All our timber doors have a BAL rating

An entryway door is a focal point for the exterior of the home and sets the scene for everything that continues throughout the home and should be given the importance it deserves.

Timber doors definitely look and feel different to other products on the market including hollow core doors. Timber doors can add instant warmth and a welcoming environment to a home. The strength and weight of a timber door feels different as well. Opening and closing a good strong timber door definitely feels like quality and security.

This is obtained from a solid timber or a solid core timber door made out of a hardwood product, which means undesirables don’t stand a chance of breaking it down. A top priority when securing your home or property.

Timber also has thermal qualities which assist an eco friendly home as timber absorbs heat during the day and releases the heat during the night.

Not all Timbers doors are created equal and as we all know the saying goes, you get what you pay for. At the end of the day budget always has to factor in at some point so how do you get the best value for your money? By knowing what to look out for.

   2. Where does the timber come from?

Our manufacturers are a 100% Australian owned family company that have been manufacturing timber doors for more than 30 years. They source only high quality materials and select environmentally friendly, legal timbers in the manufacturing of their products.

Timber doors are non-toxic and durable. Timber has been the preferred building material for the building industry for centuries.

Our doors are produced from planted species which reduces carbon dioxide levels released into the air and decreases the carbon footprint and the negative impacts of the building industry on the environment.

   3. What style of door do I need?

If you are looking at replacing an existing front door or selecting one for a new build, the style of house is going to play a big part in this decision. Making the right selection can give an older style 80’s exterior a much needed refresh and modern look adding to the value of your home. Keep the era of the house in mind because adding something ornate to a classic home can work beautifully keeping it simpatico. However adding that same ornate door to a modern industrial minimalist house could be jarring.

The best place to start when selecting a door is to decide whether you want a solid timber door to maintain privacy or you would like to introduce glass panel features into your door. This is a great option if you have a very dark interior you would like to draw more light into.

Another thing to consider when selecting a style is environment. If you live on a busy street, a solid timber door can help reduce exterior noise and help keep your privacy.

A popular style timber door is the simple lines of a skandi inspired door. With simple but strong lines shown in a vertical or horizontal panel. This style lends itself to work with a wide range of homes from a mid century gem to a new contemporary build, making it very versatile. Leading on from this style is the addition of glass panels giving the door a light and airy transition from outside to inside.

At SSTG we have a wide range of timber doors to suit many different home designs. We are also happy to help if you need extra assistance with your selection.

   4. Locks, handles and hardware

Installing a new timber door is a great time to upgrade your security technology.

Digital locking solutions are increasing in popularity for their keyless and remote entry abilities.

For traditional security choose from a door handle and lock set (entrance set) or a separate bar handle and locking system. A huge range of door handle finishes and colours to choose from are a great area to really make an impact.

Many people also choose to upgrade their screen doors at the time of installing a new front door. Adding a Crimsafe security door will give you the ultimate protection for your home and another layer of security. A Crimsafe security screen door gives you the confidence to be able to open your front door with the peace of mind that you are still secure and protected, when the security screen is locked. This gives you the freedom to open the door to strangers, leave the front door open to catch the evening breeze and sleep well at night knowing you have real protection.

   5. Can I change my existing door size?

For existing doors and frames a great way to make an entrance door bigger, whether for aesthetics or accessibility is to use the adjoining side light window.

A new frame encompassing this area can be fitted and an additional half width fully functioning door can be added to match the new front door.

All our timber doors are installed by highly experienced carpenters with more than 50 years experience so you are guaranteed a professional installation.

Bonus question!

Will my timber door require maintenance?

Yes, maintaining your timber door will reward you with many years of smooth operation and longevity. A yearly clean with a soft cloth, and warm soapy water- (being carful not to wash the door) but wipe debris from the face of the door including nooks and crannies, removing bugs and spider webs. Make sure to use a dry cloth after to ensure no moisture is left.

Repaint or re-varnish the door every couple of years to maintain protection from moisture and the sun. Clean glass panels and door handles to keep that as new look.
